The project began with extensive documentation of the physical sites using photogrammetry scanning. Thousands of photographs were processed to create high-fidelity 3D models preserving every crack, weathered surface, and architectural detail. Where physical deterioration had erased historical features, collaboration with historians and archival photographs enabled digital restoration of elements to their original appearance. The result is a time capsule that captures both the current state and historical context of each location.
Memory of a Place
VR Historical Experience
Memory of a Place is an immersive VR experience that transports users through time, allowing them to explore and interact with historically significant locations in their original context, preserving cultural memory for future generations.
Tools & Technologies
Overview
Created for the Elmax Foundation's cultural preservation initiative, Memory of a Place captures locations of historical and emotional significance before they succumb to time or urban development. The project employs advanced photogrammetry techniques combined with historical research to reconstruct spaces as they appeared in their prime. Users don't just view these spaces—they inhabit them, creating personal connections to shared cultural memory.

VR Environment Design
Crafting immersive historical environments for VR required balancing visual fidelity with performance optimization. Each space was carefully lit to evoke the atmosphere of its historical period while ensuring VR comfort standards. The environments support both room-scale exploration and seated experiences, making the project accessible to users with different VR setups. Ambient soundscapes based on historical research complete the sensory immersion.

Interactive Discovery
Users can interact with historically significant objects within the environment, triggering contextual information and personal stories from people who lived in these spaces. The interaction system was designed to feel natural and unobtrusive, encouraging exploration and discovery. Collectible memories—audio recordings, photographs, and written accounts—reward thorough exploration and build a comprehensive picture of life in these historical moments.
