Creating authentic Dutch/Amsterdam driving conditions required meticulous attention to detail and careful balance between realism and gameplay readability. The environment features over 200 unique assets including meticulously crafted roads with proper Dutch markings, historically accurate Amsterdam-style buildings, period-appropriate vehicles, and realistic pedestrian spaces. Every element captures the unique character of Dutch urban infrastructure while maintaining clear visual hierarchy for gameplay.
OMRIJ

Tools & Technologies
Overview
Leading the visual development of OMRIJ as Team Leader and Senior Game Artist, this project delivers a cutting-edge driving simulation that replicates authentic Dutch/Amsterdam driving conditions. The work demanded careful balance between photorealism and gameplay clarity—ensuring players could effectively learn driving skills while enjoying a visually stunning experience. From environment design to UI systems, every element serves both educational and entertainment purposes.
Environment Design

Lighting & Lookdev
Gameplay clarity was prioritized while maintaining visual realism. The lighting system supports multiple time-of-day scenarios including bright daylight for beginners, challenging dusk conditions, and night driving with realistic headlight simulation. Through strategic use of emissive decals, PBR material variation, and thoughtful scene layout, the lighting design guides player focus during critical driving scenarios without breaking immersion.

Materials & Shading
A modular decal material system was created for road markings and traffic signs, enabling fast iteration and consistent visual rules across the city. This system supported scalability and production efficiency throughout development, ensuring that high-fidelity surfaces remained performant across the entire simulation environment.

UI & Environment Systems
Gameplay-driven feedback
UI and environment systems were built to support gameplay clarity and scoring, combining functional UI designed in Figma and implemented in Unreal Engine with Navigation Space-based pedestrian movement and system-aware environment behavior to support structured driving scenarios.

HUD Design
The user interface was designed in Figma and implemented in Unreal Engine with a focus on clarity and accessibility. The HUD provides real-time feedback for speed, navigation, scoring, and traffic law compliance without cluttering the driving view. The main menu features a sleek, modern aesthetic that reflects Dutch design sensibilities, while the in-game UI uses contextual prompts that appear only when relevant. The scoring system provides immediate feedback on driving performance, helping learners understand and correct their mistakes in real-time.

Vehicle & Animation
The player vehicle features detailed interior and exterior modeling with fully functional dashboard instruments, mirrors, and controls. Vehicle physics were tuned to provide realistic handling that teaches proper driving techniques while remaining accessible to new players. The camera system offers multiple views optimized for different learning scenarios.
