The environment was built using a modular kit-bash approach, with over 40 unique modular pieces that can be recombined to create varied configurations. This workflow mirrors AAA game production pipelines and demonstrates efficient asset creation practices. Each module was designed with clean UV layouts and trim sheet texturing to maximize visual variety while minimizing texture memory footprint.

Cinematic Environment Design
A personal exploration of sci-fi environment design in Unreal Engine 5, focusing on atmospheric lighting, modular asset creation, and cinematic composition to create a visually striking futuristic space.
Tools & Technologies
Overview
This personal project explores the boundaries of real-time environmental storytelling within a sci-fi setting. The goal was to create an environment that could serve as a backdrop for a larger narrative—a space that felt lived-in, mysterious, and technologically advanced. Every lighting decision, material choice, and compositional element was designed to evoke curiosity and draw viewers deeper into this imagined world.
Modular Design System

Atmospheric Lighting
The lighting design creates a moody, atmospheric experience with carefully placed practical lights that both illuminate and tell a story. Volumetric fog adds depth and mystery, while emissive materials provide futuristic accents. The color palette was inspired by classic sci-fi films—cool blues and warm accent lights creating visual tension and guiding the viewer's eye through the space.

Material & Surface Detail
Creating believable sci-fi surfaces required developing custom materials in Substance Designer that balance futuristic aesthetics with realistic wear and weathering. Metallic panels show subtle scratches from maintenance, rubber seals show compression marks, and control panels have fingerprint smudges around frequently-used buttons. These micro-details create subconscious believability that grounds the fantastical setting.
